Back to Basics

I tend to be a little adventurous when it comes to style. I'll usually go for something funky and fun, rather than traditional. I always feel like fashion is more of a creative outlet, and a way to express individuality, so I'll admit that, yes, sometimes I push the boundaries. Still, there are times when simple classic attire is called for, and as luck would have it, I found just the right jeans and white button-down for the days when I need to look "adultish". Let me just say that I love jeans. I probably have way too many pairs of jeans for a normal human being, but styles vary and not every situation is appropriate for skinny high-waisted or ripped flares... enter these amazing Estella High Rise Ankle Flare Jeans from Citizens of Humanity. The first thing you'll notice about these jeans is the denim quality. The color and the cut are just about perfect too; they have that naturally warn color and for my boyish body type, the little flare at the ankles gives a slimming effect. Perfection.

Everyone needs a couple of crisp, white shirts and as much as I love the likes of Thomas Pink and even JCrew, I'll have to admit that these Brooks Brothers Non-Iron Classic-Fit Dress Shirt are my favorite when it comes to classic white dress shirts. Crafted from crisp cotton with a touch of comfy stretch, this wardrobe essential features a classic fit, a forward-point collar and Brooks Brothers' signature 6-Pleat Shirring® at the single-button barrel cuffs. Did I mention that you don't have to iron it? I really don't like to iron... so this shirt wins.

If you've read anything I've written before, you may remember that I'm not that tall. In fact, I've recently been told by my physician that I've lost about an inch in height and I'm still confused about that diagnosis. My solution is heels, and these Salvator Ferragamo Erika Mesh and Patent leather wingtip pumps are my new absolute favorite. Oh, and they are on major sale right now. Check the link. The small details of pink mesh and a skinny ankle strap scream sexy, and the wingtips... well, they just make you look smart, in a gangster sort of way.

It's always good to have a few classic options in your closet. It makes it easy for you to just grab an outfit and go without too much thought. Plus when you have strong staples, they last for years. A classic belt like this woven Salvator Ferragamo Belt is also one of my go to pieces for all sorts of reasons. The obvious is that it's black, the less obvious is that there are no belt holes, and I can use this belt for lower rise jeans and high-waisted too. It's like two belts in one...

So, if you're like me, and showing up to one of your childrens' conferences or a PTA coffee in a concert tee and camo pants seems like a dicey choice, perhaps this can be an inspirational option. Go for the basics, with a little bit of an edge.
